I didn't work for eight years. I was told if I said condom again, funding would be removed. I was threatened repeatedly, my life was threatened, and I decided I had to stick with it."

With Casino, then, there really isn’t that much of a plot, but instead just characters walking the plank to their inevitable demise. This gives Scorsese a chance to have fun and play in this environment, with hug stacks of money, chain-smoking, bright casino lights, bright blood, cursing and Joe Pesci-isms. He doesn’t worry about the end result of each character because it doesn’t matter so much. You know where this story is going, and he makes that clear by showing you what happens to Sam right upfront. Of course, this turns out to be a misdirection, but either way, Sam’s life as it is in Casino ends even if he isn’t killed. In a final voiceover, he describes how the casinos were taken over by corporations and everything was made into a theme park. In other words, the world of this film no longer exists, and Sam’s and Nicky’s environment died with them. He speaks fondly of this time like it was a utopia even though what we see is a hyper-violent world in which everyone suffers in the end. Maybe it’s because Sam is still too trusting that he imagines this time to be so perfect. In his head, were it to happen again, he wouldn’t slip up. What seems inevitable to the viewer (based on the character-types and their inherent volatility) never seemed set in stone to him. I guess Sam is an optimist.
Casino fulfills Scorsese’s interest in the mechanics of violence, power, and criminality, and opens up territory suggested in The Age of Innocence and in studying not just social outsiders, but its winners, to study how often in American society that old adage of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s about there being no second acts in American lives, proves true, and why. Sam, Ginger, and Nicky triumph by being the most exacting, enthusiastic, and ruthless in their fields. They are pure entrepreneurs, but their utter confusion of success with plunder destroys all three of them to varying degrees. Ginger and Nicky are seriously screwed-up people, and Sam’s offering all he has to a woman he knows is venal and untrustworthy reeks of masochism. Casino moves from ’ true-crime black comedy to a new realm, one of classical tragedy. As in Euripides and Shakespeare, it uses the extreme lives of its colossal characters to reflect on ordinary human faults, allowed to reach an extreme through the scale of their lives. Most people only feel like the world collapses when their marriage busts up, but in Casino it literally does.
Based on a true story and one of the MGM casino movies, “21” portrays the thrilling account of a group of MIT students who become experts in blackjack card counting and subsequently win millions in Las Vegas. Led by an unorthodox math professor, the team navigates the high-pressure environment of blackjack, dealing with the extravagant lifestyle, the excitement of big money, and the watchful eye of casino security.

How much is based on real characters and events?
Pretty much everything. Piscano is Carl DeLuna, who kept all those records. Mr. Nance, who brings the money from the casino to Kansas City, is based on a man named Carl Thomas, who was recently killed in a car crash. Mr. Green, the Tangiers president, Rothstein, Ginger, Nicky Santoro and his brother—these are all based on real people. Sometimes things that happened in Chicago are placed in Vegas. We did have some problems about being specific, which meant saying “back home” instead of Chicago, and having to say “adapted from a true story” instead of “this film is based on a true story,” which was the lawyers’ language.
It gives the film some of its best lines
Scorcese's normal supporting cast are also involved in this film, including his great mother - even though she usually has incredibly minimal roles, they are always memorable.
Scorcese seems to have several different directing styles, and Casino follows in the tradition of Goodfellas as a pseudo-documentary.

Casino is a breathless amalgamation of mobile camerawork, snappy editing, scintillating rock music, fast-paced monologues and virtuoso performances. It may not have the feel of a complete masterpiece like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or Goodfellas but is still an example of Scorsese and his frequent collaborators working to the best of their abilities, in a genre that they have given so much to since the 1970s and through to the present day. Such is the richness and detail Casino gives to you, it sometimes feels like you are sitting in on a history lesson about the Mafia but believe me, you will never have another lesson as astonishingly energetic or entertaining as this one.

of felt the film "possesses a stylistic boldness and verisimilitude that is virtually matchless". He praised De Niro's performance as "outstanding" and felt Stone was "simply a revelation here". However, he noted Pesci "holds up his end of the picture perfectly well, but Nicky is basically the same character he won an Oscar for in but with a shade less of an edge." of wrote the film "is not the equal of or , the more instinctive pieces in the crime trilogy that the flawed completes (Coppola's fell off far more precipitously). It is, however, just as unmistakably the work of a virtuoso — bold, brutally funny and ferociously alive."

What was the hook that persuaded you to tackle another mafia subject after Goodfellas?
The first newspaper article Nick Pileggi showed me was about the police covering a domestic fight on a lawn in Las Vegas one Sunday morning. And in that article it slowly began to unravel, this incredible ten-year adventure that all these people were having, culminating in this husband and wife arguing on their lawn, with her smashing his car, the police arriving, and the FBI taking pictures. As you work back to the beginning, you find this incredible story with so many tangents, and each is one more nail in their coffin. It could be the underboss of Kansas City, Artie Piscano, constantly complaining that he always had to spend his own money on trips to Las Vegas and never got reimbursed. Or it could be the unrelated homicide that made the police put a bug in the produce market that Piscano kept in Kansas City. Even they’ve forgotten about it, but it picks up all his complaining and alerts FBI men round the country to all these names. They’re surprised to hear the names of the Vegas casinos being mentioned in a Kansas City produce market. What’s the connection? Then, quite separately, a court decrees that Anna Scott should have her share of the money as a partner of the president of the Tangiers. But instead of settling with her, the mob shoot her, which also really happened. This then brings police attention to their frontman, the president, although he was in no way involved in the decision to kill her, and he begins to realize what’s going on, although there’s nothing much he can do about it. And then you have Ace Rothstein and Ginger and Nicky Santoro, all very volatile characters. I just thought it would be a terrific story.
Casino Summary, Trailer, Cast, and More
First of all, it's GREAT to see you posting again after a lengthy (for us, anyway!) hiatus. I enjoyed reading this. I'm not much of a Scorcese viewer and have never seen "Casino." This is by far the closest nudge I've ever encountered towards seeing it because I adore Sharon Stone and always felt she was underrated by many of the people who bestow awards on performers. Hearing how great she was in it and how essential she is to the narrative, I feel like I finally want to see the movie. (Lord knows that most of the time I've followed recommendations of yours, I didn't regret it. And, in fact, have lifelong gratitude for "Dinah East" alone!! LOL) As an aside, I will tell you that a dear friend of mine was in Las Vegas - oh... probably 20 years ago or more - and had personal interaction with two famous people on that trip. She couldn't say enough about how wonderful Alan King was (whose image is often to the contrary) nor express how appallingly rude and nasty Andy Williams was (ditto!)!!! Sometimes things are just not as they seem, I guess. Welcome back (to your own blog - ha ha!) I always learn a lot from your posts.
